With a shorter barrel you are going to have a shorter sight radius, and it may be more difficult to get a good sight picture with the shorter barrels as you get older (fuzzy sights front and rear). They shoot most accuretly if the clearance is .003 or less. That's a pretty snug fit and can be pretty hard to load in a fouled bore. The original Minie' bullet to bore fit could be all over the map and it was usually rather loose so accuracy suffered and for the most part the military didn't care.

The bullet is a 507 grain, with a single wrap 20# paper patch. The bullet goes down with a small amount of pressure, but not very much. This little plate can be about 3/4" wide, 3" long, 1/8" thick and the hole at one end. You slip this over the ramrod and lift up the long end.

I found that when shooting with a nitro card I was getting a donut pattern, though the standard Skychief load still significantly reduced pattern size. The lock on the Pedersoli Besses are the style used on pattern 1756 and 1769 Besses with the wrong markings. It shows only one screw hole behind the flintcock because it has a long sear spring. Later Bess locks showed 2 screws because they shortened the sear spring and they added a hole to the top jaw screw.

One he did he was going to freshen, but the rifling was a left hand twist and he couldn't do that so bored it out from .50 to .54.
